Mark your calendar and bring a friend to an important community event, a panel discussion, “Christian Nationalism, Then and Now,” presented by Actions in Faith & Justice on Tuesday, March 24th, from 7 – 8:30 pm at Rowan Museum, 202 N. Main Street, Salisbury, NC.

From the Salisbury Post : Upcoming Rowan Museum panel discussion explores Christian nationalism

Rowan Museum will host Christian Nationalism Then and Now, a panel discussion on Christian Nationalism organized by Actions in Faith & Justice.

The event will be held on March 24 from 7 to 8:30 pm. It is free and all are welcome. “Christian Nationalism is a political ideology that seeks to merge Christianity and a particular type of American identity, distorting both the Christian faith and the United States constitution,” notes a release from Actions in Faith & Jusitice.

The release noted that according to Christians Against Christian Nationalism, “it often overlaps and provides cover for white supremacy and racial subjugation,” adding that it is understood as a political ideology that uses Christian language for nationalistic aims, undermining the Constitution’s separation of church and state and religious freedom for all.

During the evening’s discussion four panelists will provide professional perspectives on the topic.

Aaron Kepley, historian and director of the Rowan Museum, will present a historical overview of Christian Nationalism, including its history in Rowan County.

Rev. Kimberly Clarke Turner, Hood Seminary, will provide theological evidence that refutes the connection of Christian faith with political and economic agendas.

Rev. Suzanne Parker Miller, founder of Pastors for NC Children, will discuss the negative impact of Christian Nationalism on public education and on the wellbeing of children and their families.

Rounding out the evening, Devin Withrow, director of community engagement for the Joint Baptist Council on Religious Freedom, will inform the audience about the national organization Christians Against Christian Nationalism. He will also share his experiences in establishing and leading a local affiliate of the national organization in Winston-Salem.
