After our notice last week of the cancellation of the July 1 meeting by Elections Board Chair Dave Collins, the meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 8 at 12:30 pm with the notice reading, “to vote on the Early Voting Plan for the 2026 General Election. All we can say is: “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

As of now, the Rowan County Board of Elections will reconvene to vote on the Early Voting Calendar on July 8. Please show up to support accessible voting for ALL Rowan voters. Be there by 12:15 pm. to find a seat or earlier to sign up for public comment.

Back history – At the June 10th meeting, new members Evelyn Medina and Dee Dee Wright upheld their oath of office and attempted to find an equitable compromise within the 5 plans presented, the wishes of the public, and the bare minimum of days favored by the three Republicans. Medina and Wright were the adults in the room. Board members Elaine Hewitt, John Leatherman, and Chair Dave Collins appeared tone deaf to the voice of the people. With no consensus, the decision, based upon board rules, became a calendar to be decided in Raleigh.

With many thanks to voters, we continued to send emails to the local board, wrote letters to the editor, spoke at gatherings, and prepared for activating local support to the State Board of Elections in Raleigh.

Something worked. Whether the responsibility shown by the new members to do their job for ALL voters or the public presence and pressure from the community, what matters is that all members of the Rowan County Board of Elections appear ready to make a Rowan County decision for Rowan County voters.
