Two letters published prior to the decision by the Republican majority in Raleigh to gerrymander yet another Congressional district to Trump. Thank you to everyone who called representatives and sent in public comments about this quick power move. Wouldn’t it be democratic to have legislators working for and listening to the people of NC? Additional information at the end of these letters from Democracy Docket.

Geoffrey Hoy: Gerrymandering

Why are we (THE PEOPLE) constantly caught trying to understand the big political fights over “districting and re-districting” (aka gerrymandering – the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries.)

Answer: It’s a simple matter of politicians picking their voters to grab or keep power rather than WE THE PEOPLE picking our political leaders.

In 2024 in North Carolina, we had districts drawn on a non-partisan basis for our congressional districts. The result was 7 Republicans and 7 Democrats were elected. This was a clear representation of North Carolina as a “purple” state. In 2024 the maps were redrawn on a partisan basis with the result of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats being elected. This election gave the Republicans their three vote margin of victory in the U.S.House of Representatives!

It’s all about POWER, not fair representation of citizens!

If Republicans in Raleigh were listening to their constituents they would acknowledge a recent September 2025 poll by conservative pollster Opinion Diagnostics that showed that “76% of North Carolina voters say it should be illegal for gerrymandering to be used to discriminate against voters based on their political party. There is also strong, bipartisan agreement on this point among voters, with 66% of Republicans, 79% of Democrats, and 82% of Unaffiliated voters saying the type of partisan gerrymandering being considered by NC Senate leadership should be against the law.”

And now the Republican dominated state legislature, bowing to the wishes of the President, is planning to redrawn the map again to win one more seat in congress by gerrymandering one more Democratic district to add one more seat in congress to Republicans. All at the expense of the citizens of North Carolina.

I protest this Unrepresentative POWER GRAB!

Follow Karen’s lead and contact your representatives and tell them how much you dissent this move.
As Governor Stein said after the House voted,
“Today, the Republican leadership in the legislature failed the people of North Carolina.”

North Carolina Republicans will introduce a redrawn Congressional map when they meet the week of Oct. 20. Their intention is to give their party still another electoral advantage in 11 of the state’s 14 U.S. House districts. In 2023, our state GOP redrew our maps so that Congressional seats, using advanced mapping technology, moved from a 7-7 split between Democrat and Republican to 10-3, favoring Republican lawmakers.

The redrawn maps racially discriminate against Black voters by splitting or packing their voting blocs to help GOP candidates win.

GOP legislative leaders claim that this action is in response to similar actions in left-leaning states such as California, which proposed adding additional legislative seats in response to a power grab by Texas Republicans.

The difference is, California is allowing its citizens to vote in a state-wide election for Proposition 50 — The Election Rigging Response Act — which approves temporary, emergency congressional district maps to counter the scheme to rig next year’s U.S. Congressional election in favor of the GOP. California lawmakers also made a commitment to independent, nonpartisan redistricting after the next census.

Will your N.C. Legislative Delegation comply with the N.C. GOP power grab and dilute the votes of North Carolinians? Will North Carolinians be allowed to have their voices heard at the ballot box? Please plan to contact your legislators this week to express your thoughts about their blatant, unAmerican abuse of power.
