On Saturday, April 12th, 10 am, the Rowan County Democratic Party will host guest Speaker, Alyssa Smith Harris, Rowan County’s Public Health Director.  Harris will share information about the health challenges that currently exist in our county. 

RCDP believes that education leads to more informed civic engagement by residents and strives to provide speakers and subjects that are important to all Rowan residents. Doors open at 9:45 am. Breakfast is a potluck and we ask that, if possible, you bring something to share. Attendance is free although donations are gratefully accepted.

Guest speaker Alyssa Harris serves as Rowan County’s Public Health Director providing direction and oversight for preventing illness and disease, promoting health, and protecting the community. On the 12th she will address health challenges specific to Rowan County; things like cancer, drug abuse, obesity, and other diseases. Her talk will also address the challenges our county may face due to the current uncertainties in our federal health care system.

Harris is a Rowan County native and came back to Rowan after receiving her undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in public health at the University of South Carolina, and is currently working on her Doctorate in Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill. Her passion is in making the healthy choice the easier choice, advocating for community health, encouraging collaboration among agencies, and modernizing local public health to support the vital conditions for healthy living.
