Appreciate and consider joining those who take the time to write and stand up for their beliefs, to stand up for people they don’t even know, and to ask questions about the state of our democracy. These particular letters were chosen for the RCDP audience. If you want to read what others in Rowan are thinking, regularly read the entirety of your hometown paper for differing viewpoints.

Imperialism – President Trump publicly states he wants to take back the Panama Canal by force if necessary, annex Canada as 51st state, take possession of Greenland by whatever means, own Gaza and control mineral rights in Ukraine. How do Trump’s imperialist ambitions differ from China’s claim to Taiwan or Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in his desire to re-establish the Russian Empire?  What say you? — Marie Sofley

Educator Organization Speaks Out – RALEIGH — The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) released the following statement last week after newly discovered photos of failed Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin wearing a Confederate uniform were exposed. “Jefferson Griffin says, ‘I have grown, learned and dedicated myself to values that promote unity, inclusivity and respect for all people,’ but apparently, not for the 60,000 North Carolina voters he wants to exclude from the democratic process — including more than 170 NCAE members. Supreme Court justices must respect all people, all the time. They cannot pick and choose when it is politically expedient.” Tamika Walker Kelly, NC Association of Educators president

Think about it – Your taxes have, until the present administration, been used to fund an array of services; all with consent and support of a majority of taxpayers. Since the government is cutting or eliminating a great number of these services what will be done with your tax money? On April 15, will you be paying taxes for uses of which you approve? Will your tax money be used to offset lower taxes for those with incomes much greater than yours. Think about it. — Eugene Goetz

No comparison – Lincoln had his team of rivals. Trump has his team of fools. — Ed Hege

Stirring it up – In the March 25 column “Celebrating International Transgender Day,” the author uses the fairy tale about the emperor to validate her beliefs about transgender and gender-non-conforming people, instead of medically proven research. After her rant about this being just “let’s pretend,” she ends with “Can’t we just get along?” This doesn’t seem to be the objective of her column. Seems that she, like Trump, instead of getting along would rather stir up a little more resentment. — Jim Weaver

Gene Nichol: All means all – I know it has become impossible to keep up. But last week, a federal court enjoined yet another core Trump initiative — Executive Order 14183 — declaring that military service by transgender persons is “inconsistent” with the “requisite warrior ethos” needed to achieve “military excellence.” Accordingly, Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth issued a new policy (Dkt. 63-1) disqualifying “transgender troops from service without an exemption.”

Nixon comparisons are too kind – Read more at: https://www.salisburypost.com/2025/03/25/letter-nixon-comparisons-are-too-kind/ – I don’t recognize President Trump. We thought he had some good ideas, however now I hear people comparing him to President Nixon. That is too kind. I’m beginning to think we should instead compare him to the former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. President Duterte ruled according to his own rules, rounding up criminals and killing them without trials. Please President Trump, tell me that it ain’t so. Surely Trump has respect for our government which created this great country. Or I could also add other governments in different countries where we are intricately connected. Please President Trump, please those politicians who support him; what’s going on? — Audrey Armistead

Agree and disagree – Dear author of “Where’s the civility?”, I agree that we need to be civil with each other.  But you do recognize that many of us do not agree with your position on prior administrations or the current one. I hope that we can discus- s our differences with vigor and honor without disparaging anyone. As a veteran of the Air Force, I served our country for 23 years to preserve the Constitution, democracy and freedom of expression. I was not required to be loyal to any president, but I did carry out lawful orders from my superiors. Different politicians have different priorities that are not supported by everyone. President Trump was duly elected last November, but not by the majority of voters. So, I hope that you will listen to us on the other side to understand the issues we support and why we believe as we do. — Richard Paschall Colonel USAF, retired
