Rowan Democrats Jan 2023 Breakfast – What is Winning? Lessons from 22 for 24 with Julia Buckner

Exciting, energetic, inspiring, and challenging—words describing the two Democratic speakers at the monthly Democratic breakfast on Jan. 14 th in Rowan County!

First, Anderson Clayton, an Appalachian State graduate, is running for chair of the North Carolina Democratic party. She shared her experiences in Boone as the Watauga Democratic Party sued the state Board of Elections to keep voter registration on the ASU campus. Saturday she challenged those present to become involved in local committees and politics and to ask how local monies from the American Rescue Plan are being used and to advocate for policies beneficial to everyone.

Julia Buckner, the main speaker challenged precinct chairs to do the job and for every precinct to organize. As the former president of the NC Democratic women, she tested knowledge of precinct matters. It only takes five active Democrats to organize a precinct. In the 2020 election 657,712 Democrats in North Carolina failed to vote. In Rowan County, 7500 Democrats were non-voters in 2020. Precinct chairs must learn who are the Democratic voters in their precincts, if they vote and where they fall on the support scale. Chairs and volunteers must encourage neighbors to vote and talk to them about their feelings on current policies and which candidates support those policies.

Prior to the above speakers, Chair Geoffrey Hoy welcomed everyone and recognized precinct chairs, local officials present, the Young Democrats of Rowan and Cabarrus County, and Alissa Redmond. He thanked Ken Swoope for donating the breakfast and his time. Kenneth Stutts reminded all of the municipal elections this fall.
