SUMMARY:Community Event - Advocating for Fair Early Voting Plan for 2025 Wednesday\, Aug. 6th\, 12:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:The Two Nanas\, Pam & Nan\, are reminding us that this Wednesday\, August 6th\, at 12:30\, the Rowan County Board of Elections will vote on one of 4 Early Voting plans for the 2025 Municipal Elections. Located within Rowan Community Center\, previously known as West End Plaza or the old mall\, 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd West\, Salisbury\, NC. \nThey suggest that you arrive at 12:15 pm for the 12:30 meeting and remind: “There is a public comment period\, however your presence alone speaks volumes. There’s nothing quite like a huge crowd.” \nThe 4 plans follow: (The Two Nanas suggest Plan C “as a fair option for municipal elections as traditionally turnout is smaller than during a general election. Plan C begins with 9 consecutive days\, a weekend break followed by 6 additional consecutive days. Our compromise selection is based upon the reality of the NC General Assembly approving “a law to strip the governor’s election board powers\, risking creating a precedent for partisan power-grabbing.” North Carolina Court Enables a Partisan Shift on State Elections Board“ \n\n\nPlan A: 13 days Includes (1) Saturdays – Beginning Thursday\, October 16th and ending Saturday\, November 1st\, Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.Saturday\, November 1st – 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (*Includes only legally required dates and times.) \n\n\nPlan B: 14 days Includes (2) Saturdays – Beginning Thursday\, October 16th and ending Saturday\, November 1st\, Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.Saturday\, October 18th\, and November 1st – 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \n\n\nPlan C: 15 days Includes (2) Saturdays and (1) Sunday Beginning Thursday\, October 16th and ending Saturday\, November 1st\, Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday\, October 18th\, and November 1st – 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. -Sunday\, October 19th – 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n\n\nPlan D: 17 days Includes (3) Saturdays and (2) Sundays – Beginning Thursday\, October 16th and ending Saturday\, November 1st\, Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday\, October 18th\, October 25th\, and November 1st – 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.Sunday\, October 19th\, and October 26th – 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n\n\nLOCATION: Located within Rowan Community Center\, previously known as West End Plaza or the old mall\, 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd West\, Salisbury\, NC. \nTIME: Arrive at 12:15 pm\, meeting begins at 12:30 pm

SUMMARY:BLUE WAVE BOOKWORMS BOOK CLUB - July 29th\, 1:30 pm - Discussion continues
DESCRIPTION:Blue Wave Bookworms announce the new book for the June and July discussion will be Timothy Snyder’s “On Freedom.” The second discussion meeting is on Tuesday\, July 29th\, from 1:30 – 3:00 pm at Rowan County Democratic Headquarters\, 1504 West Innes Street\, Salisbury\, NC 28144. \nAll are welcome and if you have not read the book you are still invited to attend and listen. The plan is to try and cover pages 1-161 at the June meeting and then to wrap up pages 162-276 and conclude the book at the July 29th meeting. Book club meets the last Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. \nKirkus Reviews calls the book: An incisive\, urgently relevant analysis of—and call to action on—America’s foundational ideal.” \n“The author argues that it’s absurd to think of government as the enemy of freedom; instead\, we ought to reimagine how a strong government might focus on creating the appropriate conditions for human flourishing and genuine liberty. Another essential and overlooked element of freedom is the fostering of a culture of solidarity\, in which an awareness of and concern for the disadvantaged becomes a guiding virtue. Particularly striking and persuasive are the sections devoted to eviscerating the false promises of libertarianism\, exposing the brutal injustices of the nation’s penitentiaries\, and documenting the wide-ranging pathologies that flow from a tax system favoring the ultrawealthy.” \nRead the entire review at: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/timothy-snyder/on-freedom-2/

SUMMARY:Thursday\, July 17th\, Good Trouble Lives On\, 5-7 PM\, Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Rowan County organizations\, Salisbury Indivisible\, Women for Community Justice\, and Rowan County Democratic Party invite the community to join them on Thursday\, July 17th\, from 5-7 pm at the intersection of Innes and Church Streets to rally for democracy and in support of the United States Constitution. \nGood Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America\, the power lies with the people. \nOn July 17\, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing\, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy of Good Trouble. \nFrom voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act to the criminalization of protest\, the Trump administration is launching a full-scale attack on our civil and human rights. But we know the truth: in America\, the power lies with the people\, and we’re rising to prove it. \nThis is more than a protest; it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead\, and a new front in the struggle for freedom. \nPlease note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. \nThis is a permitted event. You can find more information at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/810176/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_closest \n

SUMMARY:Blue Wave Bookworms - June 24th\, 1:30 pm - On Freedom by Timothy Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Blue Wave Bookworms announce the new book for the June and July discussion will be Timothy Snyder’s “On Freedom.” The meeting is on Tuesday\, June 24th\, from 1:30 – 3:00 pm at Rowan County Democratic Headquarters\, 1504 West Innes Street\, Salisbury\, NC 28144. Particularly striking and persuasive are the sections devoted to eviscerating the false promises of libertarianism\, exposing the brutal injustices of the nation’s penitentiaries\, and documenting the wide-ranging pathologies that flow from a tax system favoring the ultrawealthy.” \nRead the entire review at: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/timothy-snyder/on-freedom-2/ \n

SUMMARY:Salisbury Community Event - NO KINGS - June 14th - 3-5 pm
DESCRIPTION:MARK YOUR CALENDAR & read more about why there are NO KINGS rallies scheduled across the nation.   \nMeanwhile from 50501 – https://www.nokings.org/?SQF_SOURCE=50501 \nThey’ve defied our courts\, deported Americans\, disappeared people off the streets\, attacked our civil rights\, and slashed our services. The corruption has gone too. far. No thrones. No crowns. No kings. \nOn June 14—Flag Day—Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else. \nNo Kings is a nationwide day of defiance. From city blocks to small towns\, from courthouse steps to community parks\, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like. \nWe’re not gathering to feed his ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind. \nThe flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it. \nOn June 14th\, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones\, no crowns\, no kings.

SUMMARY:NEW: Blue Waves Bookworms Book Club
DESCRIPTION:New book club meets the last Tuesday of each month at 1:30 at RCDP Headquarters. May’s book selection is fairly short and is available in paperback. “How Fascism Works” by Jason Stanley and will meet May 27th\, 1:30 pm\, at RCDP HQ\, 1504 W. Innes STreet\, Salisbury\, NC. If you haven’t read the book you are still welcome to come and listen in. \nAbout the book – “The normalization of the fascist myth “makes us able to tolerate what was once intolerable by making it seem as if this is the way things have always been”\, Stanley writes. “By contrast the word ‘fascist’ has acquired a feeling of the extreme\, like crying wolf.” \nThe assertion that immigrants are responsible for social ills that threaten to ruin a once-great nation\, for example\, might represent run-of-the-mill racism or xenophobia. His book’s subtitle is after all “The Politics of Us and Them”. But the idea is also drawn from a blueprint shared by the most robust fascistic regimes in recent history.” – from the Guardian\, October 2018.
